I live and work in rural Perthshire, on a sunny hillside overlooking the Carse of Gowrie, midway between Perth and Dundee. I draw inspiration from the shimmering light of the river Tay below, as it snakes its silvery way towards the sea. I also work as a freelance community artist.
Current work is inspired by water and water-lilies. Observing how light flickers on the surface of water making it glint, shimmer and sparkle.
Irridescent in-glaze reduction lustres combine copper with precious metals such as silver. This creates the illusion of surface ripples, light, depth and watery reflections, sometimes with fish moving beneath.
In a kiln starved of oxygen, magical alchemy occurs, seeming to transform copper and silver into gold. Although I use the same glazes and pigments, the firing determines the result making each piece unique.
